Why is it called the 

"Meatpacking District"?

"Gansevoort Farmers Market" opened the First outdoor produce market for buying and selling regional produce on the site of today's Fort Gansevoort location. As years went by, more meat purveyors moved in and eventually the area was mostly filled by meat produce sellers. 

And thus, the name, The "Meatpacking District".

Today, the Meatpacking District is emptied out of meat packers and in return, is hosted by a wide range of fashion designers & faux French restaurants,

And as for Gansevoort Market, it resides as a trendy modern food hall.
